Made to measure shirts - features and benefits

Made to measure shirts offer an affordable route to attaining a well fitting shirt, with a good degree of customisation. Made to measure shirts are generally defined as being off the peg shirts which are customised by a tailor according to the customer's preferences and measurements, and so can be cheaper than bespoke shirts, where an individual pattern is cut for each customer.

The same rules apply as to bespoke shirts - a good made to measure shirt should always be made from one of the classic shirting fabrics, cotton or linen. It is generally considered that the best made to measure shirt fabric available is two fold cotton, which is soft and very breathable.

Single needle stitching should be used in made to measure shirts, which creates pucker resistant seams, and the collar should ideally come complete with removable collar stiffeners, either made from brass or plastic depending on the wearer's preference. Buttons should be cross stitched onto the shirt to ensure they attached firmly.

Pattern matching is also essential in good made to measure shirts. Where a shirt is made from striped or patterned fabric, care should be taken to that at each seam in the fabric, the stripes or checks match evenly, effectively almost hiding the seam. This is a time consuming process, and shows that the maker of the made to measure shirt has taken care during its construction.

Finally, a split yoke is a good indicator of quality in a made to measure shirt. The yoke (the part of the shirt that rests over the shoulders of the wearer), should be made of four pieces of fabric, and stitched in the middle, which allows for a better fit over the shoulders and also creates a pleasant pattern when the made to measure shirt is view from behind, if the shirt is made from a checked or striped fabric.
