Jermyn Street and its shirts - A history
Jermyn Street, in the St James's district of London, is synonymous with quality shirtmakers. Almost without exception, each shop on Jermyn Street caters for the discerning gentleman's needs, but the street is most famous for its bespoke shirtmakers.
During the development of the St James's area of London in the mid to late 17th Century, the first Earl of St Albans, Henry Jermyn, built and gave his name to the street. Jermyn Street underwent a number of alterations over the years, particularly with the building of Regent Street. As a result, today's Jermyn Street contains a number of architecturally interesting buildings.
Over time, Jermyn Street became associated with bespoke shirtmakers and there are many outlets along the street, which also now sell off the peg shirts.
Jermyn Street quality has long been used as the benchmark for shirts, and originally, many of the bespoke shirts were made on Jermyn Street itself. A stroll down Jermyn Street is a great way to experience the years of history that give the street its unique character.
