Button down shirts - informal style
Button down shirts have a standard folded-down collar, but the wings of the collar are fastened to the body of the shirt using small buttons. This gives a more informal feel to the shirt, and button down shirts are generally worn with single (barrel) cuffs as a result, or even with short sleeves.
In North America, button down shirts are generally considered to be fairly formal; however in Europe, they would be considered to be smart, but informal, and rarely worn with a tie.
Button down shirts were introduced in the USA in the late Victorian era, and were probably based upon the shirts used by polo players. The shirts gave the wearer a slightly sporty look, and possibly apocryphal stories tell that this style was developed to prevent the wings of the soft collar from flying upwards as the gentlemen played his sport. In more modern times, button down shirts are more frequently used in uniforms, and are commonly made from a cotton Oxford fabric.
Button down shirts remain a popular form of shirt in both the USA and in Europe, where they bridge the gap between formal and casual wear, maintaining a smart look and practicality.
