Bespoke Shirts - features and benefits of a custom-made fit

Bespoke shirts are the most exacting and customised form of men's shirts. After a detailed series of measurements are taken, a personal bespoke shirt pattern is cut for the customer by the tailor, and remains on file for future orders.

Bespoke shirts create the possibility of achieving a perfect fit, as they are individually cut to the customer's particular size. In addition, bespoke shirts allow the customer to choose from a wide range of fabric, collars and cuff options (amongst many other design features).

In contrast, made to measure shirts are generally existing off the peg shirts altered to suit the customer's measurements. Although cheaper than bespoke shirts, made to measure shirts do not offer the vast range of fabrics and options available with bespoke shirts.

There are a number of features to look for in bespoke shirts. Bespoke shirts should always be made from natural materials - the best bespoke shirt fabric available is two fold cotton, which is soft and very breathable. Again, cotton interlining should be used in the collar and cuffs of the shirt. Inferior synthetic materials can give an unpleasant stiffness to the collar and cuffs of the bespoke shirt.

A good bespoke shirt should be constructed using single needle stitching exclusively, even on the side seams. This demonstrates that the maker of the bespoke shirt invested extra time and effort in order to create a good, strong seam that should be averse to puckering after many washes. Bespoke shirts should also employ the use of a four-piece split yoke, which allows for the best fit across the shoulders.

Finally, care should have been taken to ensure that the buttons are cross-stitched onto the bespoke shirt to ensure that they will remain attached. A bespoke shirt is a great investment that should outlast an off the peg shirt and serve you well for many years.
